Air Ambulance Caribbean

The Caribbean is paradise β€” until a medical emergency happens. With limited hospital resources on most islands, fast air ambulance to Miami, New York, or beyond is often the only path to specialist care. World Ambulance covers every island in the Caribbean.

Air Ambulance Across the Caribbean

The Caribbean encompasses over 700 islands spread across more than a million square miles of ocean. Most of these islands β€” even popular tourist destinations β€” have hospitals that are simply not equipped for complex cardiac surgery, advanced stroke care, serious trauma, or pediatric intensive care. When a serious emergency happens, the patient's best chance is rapid evacuation to Miami or another major US medical center.

World Ambulance has been evacuating patients from Caribbean islands for over 30 years. We know every major airport in the region, the limitations of every island's medical resources, and the fastest routing to appropriate care.

Miami is the medical hub for the Caribbean. Jackson Memorial Hospital, Baptist Health, Cleveland Clinic Florida, and many other world-class facilities are 1–3 hours by air ambulance from virtually any Caribbean island. Most of our Caribbean transports end at Miami International Airport (MIA).

How Caribbean Air Ambulance Works

1

Call us immediately

800-971-4550 β€” we know Caribbean logistics better than almost anyone. Tell us the island and the situation.

2

We assess the fastest route

Most Caribbean islands are 1–3 hours from Miami. We identify the fastest aircraft available and the best routing.

3

Aircraft dispatched

Air ambulance aircraft are typically based in South Florida and can reach most Caribbean destinations in under 2 hours.

4

Patient collected at island hospital

Our crew arrives at the local hospital, completes a handover, and transports the patient to the aircraft.

5

Miami or direct to destination

Most patients transport to Miami. Others continue directly to their home state or country if condition allows.

Caribbean Transport Key Facts

  • Nassau to Miami: approximately 40 minutes
  • Bridgetown, Barbados to Miami: approximately 3 hours
  • Kingston, Jamaica to Miami: approximately 1.5 hours
  • Punta Cana to Miami: approximately 2 hours
  • Most Caribbean islands have paved airports capable of accepting jets
  • Cruise ship port evacuations coordinated regularly
What if the island hospital says my family member can't be moved?
Call us anyway. Our clinical team can review the medical situation independently and advise whether transport is feasible. We work with local physicians to facilitate safe transport in many cases that initially seem too complex to move.
What about small islands with tiny airstrips?
Some smaller islands have limited runway length or cannot accept jet aircraft. In those cases, we may use a turboprop aircraft appropriate for shorter runways, or coordinate a first leg by boat or helicopter to a larger island. We have done this many times.
Can you help with cruise ship emergencies in Caribbean ports?
Yes β€” this is one of our specialties. See our Cruise Ship Emergency Guide for full details.
What's the best receiving hospital in Miami for Caribbean cases?
It depends on the diagnosis. We coordinate with the most appropriate Miami facility for the patient's specific condition β€” whether that's Jackson Memorial's trauma center, Baptist Health's cardiac program, or Nicklaus Children's Hospital for pediatric cases.
