International Air Ambulance To and From Italy
Italy's healthcare system varies significantly by region. Northern Italy — Milan, Turin, Bologna — has excellent hospital infrastructure. Southern Italy and the islands have more limited specialist resources. For international travelers who become seriously ill in Italy, the goal is often to reach a major Italian city hospital for stabilization, then international repatriation from Rome or Milan.
Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is our primary Italian hub for international departures. Milan Malpensa (MXP) serves northern Italy. Naples (NAP) handles the Amalfi Coast, Campania, and southern Italy cases.
Common Italy Transport Cases
- Amalfi Coast and Capri emergencies — cardiac events, accidents, and illness requiring evacuation from limited-access coastal areas
- Tuscany and Umbria rural incidents — travelers in agritourism or rural settings requiring transport to Florence or Rome for care
- Sicily and Sardinia evacuations — island patients needing transport to mainland Italy first, then international repatriation
- Venice transport — the unique geography of Venice requires boat ambulance coordination before airport transfer
- Northern Italy industrial and business traveler evacuations — cardiac, trauma, and stroke cases from Milan and industrial northern cities
The Amalfi Coast and Capri Challenge
Capri has no airport. Patients on Capri require a medical boat (or in critical cases, helicopter) across to Naples before air transport. The Amalfi Coast road is extremely narrow and steep — ambulance response is slower than in other regions. We build these logistics into our planning from the start.
Regional Italy Coverage
Rome: FCO is the primary international departure hub. Rome's hospitals — Gemelli, Umberto I, Bambino Gesù for children — are excellent. Milan: Malpensa (MXP) handles northern Italy. San Raffaele and Niguarda are Milan's best hospitals. Florence: Careggi Hospital is excellent; patients transport to Florence airport or FCO for international departure. Venice: Boat ambulance to Marco Polo Airport (VCE) for departure. Sicily: Cases route through Palermo (PMO) or Catania (CTA) to FCO for international transport.
