International Air Ambulance To and From Italy

Italy's healthcare system varies significantly by region. Northern Italy — Milan, Turin, Bologna — has excellent hospital infrastructure. Southern Italy and the islands have more limited specialist resources. For international travelers who become seriously ill in Italy, the goal is often to reach a major Italian city hospital for stabilization, then international repatriation from Rome or Milan.

Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is our primary Italian hub for international departures. Milan Malpensa (MXP) serves northern Italy. Naples (NAP) handles the Amalfi Coast, Campania, and southern Italy cases.

Common Italy Transport Cases

The Amalfi Coast and Capri Challenge

Capri has no airport. Patients on Capri require a medical boat (or in critical cases, helicopter) across to Naples before air transport. The Amalfi Coast road is extremely narrow and steep — ambulance response is slower than in other regions. We build these logistics into our planning from the start.

Regional Italy Coverage

Rome: FCO is the primary international departure hub. Rome's hospitals — Gemelli, Umberto I, Bambino Gesù for children — are excellent. Milan: Malpensa (MXP) handles northern Italy. San Raffaele and Niguarda are Milan's best hospitals. Florence: Careggi Hospital is excellent; patients transport to Florence airport or FCO for international departure. Venice: Boat ambulance to Marco Polo Airport (VCE) for departure. Sicily: Cases route through Palermo (PMO) or Catania (CTA) to FCO for international transport.

Key Transport Facts

  • Rome FCO to New York: ~9 hours
  • Milan MXP to London: ~2.5 hours
  • Capri and Amalfi cases need boat/helicopter to Naples first
  • Venice patients require boat ambulance coordination
  • Sicily and Sardinia cases route through mainland Italy first
  • Italy cooperates well with international repatriation documentation

How do you evacuate patients from Capri?
Boat ambulance from Capri to Naples port, then ground ambulance to Naples Airport (NAP) for air transport. In critical cases, helicopter evacuation can be arranged direct to a mainland hospital helipad.
What about patients in rural Tuscany or Umbria?
Ground ambulance to the nearest suitable airport — Florence (FLR), Pisa (PSA), or Rome (FCO) — depending on patient location and destination. We plan the full chain.
Can you handle Venice transport?
Yes — Venice requires a water ambulance (ambulanza acquatica) to Marco Polo Airport (VCE). We coordinate with Venice's specialist water ambulance services.
