Air Ambulance from Athens ATH
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport serves two distinct roles in our Mediterranean operations: the main international departure hub for Greek patients and expats requiring repatriation, and the staging hub for island evacuations from Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete, and the dozens of smaller Greek islands.
ATH operates 24 hours and has dedicated general aviation facilities for private medical aircraft. Most intercontinental repatriations from Greece depart from ATH โ either directly from Athens after stabilization, or after a patient has been transferred from an island hospital.
Greece's EKAB (national EMS) operates helicopter and inter-island fixed-wing transport for island evacuations to Athens. World Ambulance coordinates with EKAB for the island-to-Athens leg, then manages the international transport from ATH.
Island Evacuation Pathways
The standard pathway for serious emergencies on Greek islands:
- EKAB helicopter or inter-island flight to Athens
- Stabilization at Athens hospital if needed (Evangelismos, Hygeia, Metropolitan)
- International air ambulance departure from ATH
World Ambulance manages all three steps. We involve ourselves as early as possible โ ideally before the island-to-Athens leg is completed โ so international transport preparations are ready the moment the patient arrives in Athens.
Athens Hospitals
Evangelismos Hospital is Athens' main academic hospital and handles the most complex cases. Hygeia Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital are the leading private facilities with good international patient services and efficient repatriation processes.
