Air Ambulance from Kathmandu and the Himalayas
Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International presents unique challenges: situated at 4,390 feet in a valley surrounded by high terrain, KTM's density altitude significantly reduces aircraft capability โ particularly in hot weather. Not all air ambulance jets can operate from KTM at all times of year. World Ambulance has extensive Nepal experience and knows which aircraft can operate from KTM safely.
For most intercontinental repatriations from Nepal, the practical approach is a domestic or regional flight from KTM to Delhi (DEL) โ ~1.5 hours โ then departing on a long-haul air ambulance jet from India's most connected international airport.
Himalayan Trekking and Altitude Evacuations
Everest region, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang, and other areas sit at altitudes where helicopter evacuation is the only practical first response. Common Himalayan emergencies: acute mountain sickness (AMS), HACE, HAPE, frostbite/hypothermia, and traumatic falls. World Ambulance coordinates with Nepali helicopter operators for the mountain-to-Kathmandu leg.
Kathmandu Hospitals
CIWEC Hospital (5km from KTM) is the premier facility for international travelers โ excellent altitude medicine expertise. Norvic International and Grande International also handle international patients.
