Air Ambulance Services in Thailand
Thailand welcomes over 30 million international visitors each year. With that volume of travelers โ many on adventure holidays, diving trips, and beach vacations โ medical emergencies are inevitable. World Ambulance coordinates more air ambulance transports from Thailand than almost any other destination in Asia.
Our Thailand transports range from critical evacuations from island hospitals with limited resources, to planned repatriations of long-term expatriates requiring specialist care back home. Whatever the situation, our team has handled it before.
Bangkok's Bumrungrad International Hospital is one of Asia's leading medical facilities and handles more international patients than almost any hospital in the world. However, patients in Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, or remote northern Thailand may be in hospitals with significantly more limited resources โ making rapid repatriation especially important.
Common Medical Emergencies We Handle from Thailand
- Diving accidents and decompression sickness โ Koh Tao and the Andaman islands are world-renowned dive sites. DCS requires immediate hyperbaric treatment and sometimes evacuation.
- Motorcycle accidents โ Thailand has some of the world's highest road traffic fatality rates. Traumatic injuries from accidents are among our most frequent Thailand cases.
- Stroke and cardiac emergencies โ often affecting older travelers, requiring rapid transport to specialist cardiac or neurological centers.
- Tropical infections โ dengue fever, leptospirosis, and other tropical diseases that become severe and require intensive care.
- Surgical complications โ patients who underwent elective surgery in Thailand and experienced complications requiring repatriation.
- Mental health crises โ requiring supervised transport for patients who are unable to travel independently.
Key Hospitals and Medical Facilities in Thailand
Bangkok
Bangkok has some of Asia's best hospitals, many with dedicated international patient departments. Bumrungrad International Hospital (Sukhumvit) and Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital are the two most commonly used by international patients. Bangkok Hospital has multiple branches across the country including in Phuket and Koh Samui.
Phuket
Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Phuket International Hospital handle most serious cases on the island. For critically ill patients, transfer to Bangkok for more advanced care is common.
Koh Samui
Bangkok Hospital Samui is the primary international facility on the island. It is well-equipped for stabilization but has limitations for complex cases. Patients with serious conditions are typically transferred to the mainland.

Safe arrival and handover
The patient arrives at the destination hospital with a full clinical handover report to the receiving medical team.
Transport Options from Thailand
Private air ambulance is required for critically ill patients, those on ventilators, or anyone who cannot safely tolerate a commercial flight. Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK) both accommodate medical aircraft. Phuket (HKT) and Koh Samui (USM) airports are also accessible to air ambulance operations.
Commercial medical escort is appropriate for stable patients who have been cleared for commercial flight by their physician. Bangkok has direct flights to the US, UK, Australia, Europe, and most major international hubs. Escorts on stretchers can be arranged on these routes for patients who need to lie flat.
